Member-only story
I went to dozens of job interviews with many different company types. From my early days till now I got asked some crazy questions and the difference is that now I know that some of them should’ve never been asked in the first place.
Some of these questions I answered, some I knew was bad on the spot, and others I came to realize later. Some are very recent and others are old. My goal is to make you aware of them and potential others to help you spot red flags that should turn you off from certain companies and cultures.
“How much do you make now?”
If an interviewer asks you this question, it is a sign they want to bargain your salary or probably don’t know how to go about paying for your level of experience. Some want to give you just enough to make you jump ship and you don’t need companies that will pay you just enough. These are the ones most likely to dry-promote you and overwork you.
In some places (states or countries), such a question is illegal so it is very important to get acquainted with your local law around candidates' pay history. Even if not illegal, such information should never be used to determine salary or negotiate salary.
